Evap code, I reset it and hopefully it was just the gas cap.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Service Engine Soon light popped on during my commute. I will have to go diagnose it after class, no loss of power or anything else notable. Maybe I’ll just park it and start driving the Mustang again. I can’t drive the BMW for more than a week before it shits the bed.

If I could give everyone I know just one thing, it would be a basic OBDII reader to keep in every car. I can’t tell you how many headaches have been avoided by having the ability to quickly read the code.

I have one, I just don’t have it with me right now. I’ll plug it in when I get home.

Mine came on like a week ago. Had a friend read the codes and its the same stupid p0171 p0174 vacuum leak. I have thus far been unable to find it.

ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE.

What do ya know I have the same light, in a similar cluster! Mines is both crankshaft position sensors ($150 each), and one of them is really tough to get to... It needs a valve check/adjustment so I’m just going to handle that while I’m in there.

I don’t know why I drive the damn thing, it always gives me problems. Last time I drove it on consecutive days my front right caliper seized. Before that, check engine light on the way to inspection.

I always tell myself “I’ll just pop into Autozone” and the light comes on VERY FAR from the nearest Autozone.

I’m going to scan it when I get home, hopefully nothing serious. If it’s too expensive the car might go into another period of hibernation. I’ll also try the proven method of disconnecting the battery and seeing if the light comes back.

Random commiseration: Yesterday while my wife was away, I thought I’d be nice and clean out her K&N (with a 50k service interval, periodic shakeouts are pretty important. I need to be sure all that sand and dust is properly making its way to the throttle body to eventually destroy the engine, after all! /s )

As with most cars, unplugging the MAF sensor is part of getting the airbox open. Naturally, I forgot to re-plug it when I put it all back together. No biggie, got a rough idle and a CEL, replugged it, and the car ran fine.

But for the next 2 hours, I had a CEL, traction control warning, as well as the LED message that both the collision warning system and lane departure warning system had failed.

Long story short, apparently certain misfire conditions can trigger completely unrelated systems to generate an error. I’m no auto engineer, but that’s insane. Way to go Honda. That’s the power of dreams nightmares.

My money is on EVAP leak.  Because it is always an EVAP leak.

I hear ya. I’ve cleared that code at least twice and it went for months. The most recent time I cleared it and it came back the same day...I figured that it’s time to do something about it.

Smoke test it. Any time you have a vacuum leak that should be the first step if theres no obvious leak

The rubber boots between the airbox and the throttle body are really hard to inspect unless you remove them completely and look, bend, twist under a bright light.

I took mine off recently and in the process, one of the little hoses that attaches to the main intake boot just crumbled in my hands. That wasn’t the original problem, but it was about to be!

I need to.  Unfortunately I do not own a smoke machine.  Maybe I can DIY one somehow.

Flashing low pressure tire icon on my Subaru is almost as bad. Yes, my tires are at proper pressure. Grrrrr.

I’ve been fighting codes with my Z3 and had mine smoke tested for free by a buddy luckily. I just got a ton of parts in for it to give it a thorough refresh. I’m rebuilding the vanos, new o2 sensors, cam sensors, just did ignition coils, air intake temp sensor, thermostat, and I’m redoing a lot of the front suspension with an fcpeuro control arm kit and offset poly M bushings for the control arms since Im swapping to M3 wheels in the spring. My bmws tend to run really well and reliably and then generally need a lot at once, but its worth it most of the time

BMWs have a charcoal filter near the gas tank and filler that goes at about 150k it may be that.

I keep a little bluetooth OBDII dongle in my consoleand use an app on my phone in a pinch. It’s been really useful. $15 on Amazon.

You can also spray some brake cleaner or starting fluid at the suspect boot to see if the idle changes. That’s a quick and dirty way to diagnose those leaks. The caddy northstars have a notorious gasket like that at the intake, and spraying brake clean at it will tell you right away if you have a leak.
